It gives us shape and a framework to protect the vital organs, such as the brain (protected by the skull), the heart and the lungs (protected by the ribcage). It also produces blood cells, stores important minerals especially calcium till it is needed by the body; and enables us to move. Without bones, we would not be able to stand, walk, run or even sit! The skeleton makes up about 20% of the human mass. When we were born, our skeleton had around 350 bones. By the time we become an adult, we will have only around 206 bones as when we grow, some of the bones fuse (join) together to form one larger bone.
